I had a child born on December 31st. Can I claim this child?

Any child born at anytime during a given a year is considered to have been born for the entire year for purposes of filing as a dependent. Generally, even if the child passed away shortly after birth, that child may also be claimed as a dependent.

Always get dependent Social Security Numbers as soon as possible. Social Security Numbers are required on all returns, regardless of the child’s age.
